[Video] Marketing Like A Five-Year-Old: Finding Your Company's Why

In the wise words of marketing expert Seth Godin, "What do you do?"

In this video, Alicia Disantis discusses the benefits of thinking like a 5-year-old when it comes to your business. Asking "why" over and over again will reveal what you actually do, and your motivations behind your products and services. This quick marketing how-to is great for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and companies who want to:

  • Stand out in a crowded market (especially if you are just getting established and need leverage)

  • Explain what they do better (this helps all businesses, regardless of success or age)

  • Grow their business (knowing why you do what you helps your marketing and sales teams create a brand story)

👉 It's all about getting back to basics and explaining why your customers should do business with you, and not a competitor. Let's learn more.

Why Asking Why is so Important

The pandemic awakened a global shift in how customers want to learn about things. Google reports that in 2020, the word “why” was asked more than ever before in the history of Google. Customers want to know the motivations and meaning behind what businesses do. Even minor purchases, like aluminum foil or oil changes are now driven by customers’ interest in brand values. Customers want to know what their money is supporting. A 2022 survey by Harris revealed that 82% of customers want a brand’s values to align with their own (source).

So in order for customers to be informed about what companies they support, you need to understand why you do what you. So get out a pen, and start jotting down answers until you can’t answer the question any longer. The results may surprise you.
